Like other film festivals this year, the 73rd edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival also had a political focus. The festival, which began on September 19 in Spain, ended yesterday. It screened Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence’s new film ‘Die My Love’. Lawrence became the youngest actress to receive the festival’s highest honor, the Donostia Award.
Jennifer Lawrence‘s opinion on the situation in Gaza was asked at a press conference. The actress clearly stated, ‘I am scared. It is tragic. What is happening in Gaza right now is nothing less than genocide. It is unacceptable. I am scared for my children, for all of our children.’
A few days ago, actress Angelina Jolie expressed her disappointment over the current political situation in the United States at the San Sebastian Festival. A similar disappointment was heard in Jennifer Lawrence’s voice. The actress said about US politics, “The kind of disrespect and violence that has been created in the United States recently is dangerous for children.” Lawrence said that it hurts her mentally.
Jennifer Lawrence said, “Those who are now 18 or so, who are eligible to vote; they assume that there is no honesty in politics. Politicians lie. They have no empathy. We should all remember that there is no opportunity to ignore what is happening in one part of the world right now. It will not take long for it to happen in your country too.”
Jennifer Lawrence urged journalists that it would not be right to put the responsibility of solving the world’s political problems on artists. She said, “Freedom of speech and individual freedom are under attack in our country. If there was something that could end this shameful situation, I would say it. Sometimes I am afraid to speak. Because maybe political leaders will distort my words and use them in a different meaning.”
